Choreographers Barbie Diewald and Shakia Barron find a meeting point across movement forms and cultural frameworks in "Concourse," a new work in progress that will premiere in 2022. Barron draws from an extensive career in Hip-Hop and other street forms such as locking, popping, and house dance. Diewald works within modern and post-modern traditions and improvisational techniques. "Concourse" is performed by six emerging artists who have had Barron and Diewald as teachers. This confluence creates an intergenerational community of inquiry, and affirms that mentorship is multidirectional: we glean as much from our mentees as from our mentors. The project resists hierarchical and linear notions of knowledge production and dissemination, centers dialogue, and celebrates the feedback loops that occur when we collapse the distinctions between self, student, teacher, and material.
Concourse is performed by Amisi Nazaire-Hicks, Sienna Jessurun, Soukeyna Abbott, Sarah Maurer, Miranda Lawson, and Katherine Kain, with live music by composer Jazer Giles
